DokuWiki on a Stick 2008-05-05

DokuWiki on a Stick is a preconfigured DokuWiki installation which comes with its own stripped down Apache webserver. This allows you to run DokuWiki from a portable device like an USB stick on any Windows computer without installing anything on the computer itself.

This new release is similar to the first version, but comes with some updated software. DokuWiki was upgraded to the latest release so was the used MicroApache. It now comes with PHP 5.2. It also has sqlite support, which isn't used currently but might in future DokuWiki releases.

Many thanks to M. Shaw for maintaining the MicroApache project which makes DokuWiki on Stick possible. If you use it, why not send him a “Thank You” mail or leave a comment here.

I absolutely adore MicroApache. The ability to run an entire server off of a CD or floppy is just mind-boggling. He has done an amazing job. I love it. ^_^

Many many thanks for providing the desktop wiki.
We here at Chem Eng Dep (AUT) use it as the standard wiki engine.

Wish all the best and hope for much more continued success.

I want test new great plugin „Structured Data Plugin” (still under development). This plugin requires the SQLite extension for PHP. How I can install this on “DokuWiki on a Stick“. Maybe SQLite available in new release. sorry for my english.

Excellent idea, am downloading it now.

My only suggestion is....why not make it available from the main download page, instead of hiding it away here!

I downloaded it and think this will be good - it ran first time out of the box.

However.....SLOOOOOOOOOOWWW  :(

OK, a Disgo stick plugged into a Pentium III 800 and IE6. But every link/pagecall/enter stroke is taking 10-15 seconds to execute. Unworkable.

OK, laptop is not a ball of fire, but even so needs to work quicker than that. suppose it would be faster with a modern PC and USB2....??

A shame...so promising.

And it holds the Promise! It's not fast as Notepad but quite fast. (max 2sec on my notebook) PIII is very slow compared to a 2year old pc and USB1 quite allright for a mouse or keyboard. Run it from harddisk and copy it to your stick when you're finished with work.

This program is very good.. but.. too slow.. :(

anyway, your work is very good.. i want next version is be faster than now. good job~

If it runs too slow, then your USB stick is probably too slow. DokuWiki has a lot of disk access, so your stick needs to be fast. Otherwise just copy the stuff to the hard drive.

I have tested it on my desktop through local host, it runs great! Now I want to copy it to a sub-directory of my homepage hosted in my company server, wonder if there will be a sync issue between two copies: one on my stick and one on the company web server?

It works realy great! I want to run this version on my small HomeServer (WinXP Prof).
Are there any reservations because of security? I want to use the Stick-Version also via Internet from external and don't have enough personal abilities and hardware to run a real DokuWiki-Server ;-)

I'm using it since 10 days or so, i'm not an expert nor a programmer, but i've tried other wikis and this is the be(a)st and easy one, plus the portability given by "the stick"! Great job, really, but i'd like to tell you my "dream": A DokuWiki On A Stick running on a portable OS On A Stick (Damn Small Linux, Damn Small whatewer but portable, i.o.w. on any USB device.
BTW Thanks a lot for now, hope i'll get a job and pay you some beers!

That is awesome!  It took me literally three minutes to have my own Wiki up and running.  And all I had to do was double-click the mapache file and PRESTO!

OMG this is so great ! I'm using it on my PC dedicated to music making. I write software tips, song ideas, lyrics (and for that, versioning is AWESOME), reminders... I can bring it to my band mates PC's... Never found a better solution than DokuWiki on a Stick.

Thank you , thank you, thank you.

I love it! After testing it out on the PC, I now have it on my USB drive and take it everywhere. Slowly beginning to populate it with content.

As pointed out it is a bit slow. I'm guessing its partly due to the fact that its running off a memory stick. However, even on the pc it was a bit slow. However, that's not too much of an issue for me. :)

$0.02 = If you feel the need to have the latest version of Apache/PHP for your copy of DokuWiki (for whatever reason) I've just released MicroApache 2.0.63 with PHP 5.2.9 or 4.4.9. Options=with GD2 or SQLite. Testing/feedback/suggestions re: DokuWiki appreciated via the feedback form on the MicroApachce site. MS

@lisa: The archive includes a README.txt file. Installation is described in there.

Can anyone tell me if dokuwiki-on-a-stick runs on a cd-rom?

Great job!
I simply downloaded, extracted on a USB key and it works!
I had uploaded some pages, it's quite fast (not a rocket, but usually in 2-3 seconds you can open index or other pages).
Perhaps in the site you could insert the simple instruction in README.TXT for beginners.

THANKS - GRAZIE -

Hi Andreas,

this is a great wee tool - thanks for sharing it!

I have one problem, though.  I saved it onto a USB stick but when I load up the wiki the next day, the template doesn't work.  It looks like there's no CSS at all.  (I'd loaded "dokubook", but even the default template isn't picking up.)

I am a complete amateur so maybe there's something really simple that I'm missing - but it's very frustrating!  I've reloaded the wiki from scratch 2 days in a row but tonight it's doing it again... :-/

(I'm running Win XP and IE8 if that makes any difference?)

Thanks!
Richard

I tried this and the update in the comments.

Neither work for me, the apache window just blinks off as soon as I run mapache. It's not there in task manager.

Also, this may have something to do with it, the folder is set to read-only, I tried changing it, it looks like it did it but when I re-open the properties, read-only is back.

Any help?

Okay, sorted. The problem was, no log folder and error.log was causing apache to exit. Created the folder and a blank error.log and all is well.

I would recommend people DON't download the link in the comments which is from another domain with suspicious WHOIS and SSL configuration.

Thank you Andreas for this WikiStick, will be very helpful.

@Cain

The download I posted before links to my personal shell, which is hosted on the server of the munich chaos computer club. Yes, the SSL certificate is not signed correctly, but there is no reason for making such a big deal out of it.

I took the opportunity to bundle the latest DokuWiki on a Stick for everyone. So it's up to you if you are taking it or not.

Actually, if you want to mirror the file on your server, I'm totally fine with that.

You can even contact me via E-Mail: str [at] vorratsdatenspeicherung [dot] de

Hello everybody,

actually I already tried to reach Andreas to tell him about the updated DokuWiki on a Stick bundles which I posted above, but got no reply, yet.

Well in the meantime, here's the latest update ...

DokuWiki on a Stick 2009-12-25 “Lemming” bundled with the latest MicroApache 2.0.63, PHP 5.2.9, GD2 and SQLite here:

https://brezn.muc.ccc.de/~str/ … -12-25.zip

As I already worked on earlier DokuWiki on a Stick releases, don't be afraid about that the download is hosted on the server of the chaos computer club munich, because it's my personal shell there and the SSL certificate is not signed correctly.

If anyone wants to mirror the file on his server, feel free to contact me: str [at] vorratsdatenspeicherung [dot] de.

Hope you enjoy it.
