Hartau May 10th 1988
Today we hiked to the Karlsfried ruin and from there to Lückendorf. We had lunch there. Afterwards we walked to Oybin. In Oybin we visited the fairy tale plays. Then we took the narrow gauge rail to Zittau.
From there we took the bus to Hartau.
The Karlsfried ruin is the ruin of a 14th century castle. Judging by the Wikipedia entry and my lack of any additional description in the diary, there seems not to be much left of it.
The fairy tale plays, were obviously more impressive. It's hard to tell from the little black&white pictures - carved wooden figurines, some animated through levers and cams depicted scenes from various German fairy tales.
From what I understand, the fairy tale plays were originally built by the wood carver Paul Riedel from 1937 onwards. Parts of it had burned down in 1967 but the remaining scenes were still a big attraction in 1988.
It seems that after some ownership changes, the collection is now available to be see again in a restored(?) state: Märchengarten Oybin.
