April Books

Time for the monthly book review again.

Amazon

I bought this one at Trident Booksellers & Cafe in Boston. If you ever happen to be in Boston, be sure to check out this lovely little store. Excellent place to sip your latte while reading.

The book itself isn't too bad either. I must admit that I never read Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, but absolutely love the BBC series with Jeremy Brett. The stories in this book aren't by Conan Doyle obviously and vary in quality. Some of them match the style of the original very well, others are a bit over the top. I still enjoyed this book.

I found this book while browsing the SmashWords library. The Crooked Beat has a really high rating and can be dowloaded for free. I absolutely loved this book. It's about an Australian junkie travelling through Thailand and India in the late 80s or early 90s. Think of it as “Trainspotting, but in Asia”. I'd have happily paid for it.

The Princess and the Penis

After I had such a good experience with SmashWords I looked for other free books in their catalog. This is a rather short one and as the name suggests a somewhat silly one as well ;-). It's basically a classic fairy tale with some tongue-in-cheek sexual innuendo. A fun read and downloadable for free.

Spirit Chasers: Unleashed

Another free book from SmashWords but not as good as the other ones. I found it quite hard to finish. There are many spelling and grammar errors in it. The story idea itself isn't too bad, but the writing style couldn't really grab me. I also found the ending rather disappointing.
